On Sunday, May 18,The New York State Covered Bridge Society will hold its monthly meeting in Clifton Park at the historic Groom’s Tavern.  A short meeting will start at one p.m. and will include a raffle, news of covered bridges in New York and surrounding states and information on upcoming events.  About two o’clock, Charles Elflein, a Schenectady resident, will present a slide show of covered bridges in Europe.  Refreshments will follow.  We welcome all visitors who would like to attend the meeting or view the presentation, and meet covered-bridgers from around the state.

This New York State Covered Bridge Society was formed in the 1960’s with the expressed purpose of being advocates for New York’s dwindling number of covered bridges.  Over the last 40 years the Society has raised money for and given advice to those responsible for maintaining and restoring covered bridges.  There are 24 historical covered bridges remaining in New York State and many more that are newer or not classified as authentic covered bridges, but as bridges that are covered.  Locally, there are four covered bridges over the Battenkill in Washington County.  Several more historic covered bridges are within easy driving distance in NYS, and farther afield in surrounding states. Hopefully they will survive to be enjoyed by future generations.

The Groom’s Tavern Historical site is located at 290 Sugar Hill Rd., Clifton Park.  Pictures, information and meeting schedules can be found at the society’s website:  www.nycoveredbridges.org
