OCTOBER MEETING MINUTES
Our meeting was held Sunday October 14th at the Wings of Eagles National Warplanes Museum in Elmira. Twenty three members attended. Raffles included a door harp from the Grant and Marie Musser collection (won by Linda Schott), two homemade apple pies donated by Marcia Bailey (won by Virginia Sargeant and Donna Freeland). These items brought in $50 to the society. Tickets for the two month raffle of a beautiful framed velvety fabric covered bridge scene were also sold. Our 50/50 divided $34 between the society and Linda Schott. Bob Michielsen covered the society store for Marikka Guay. Marikka and Dave Guay went to the dedication of the Jay Covered Bridge to observe the event for us. The meeting was brought to order at 12:45 by President Donna Freeland. Thank you and well wishes went out to Chuck and Nancy Knapp who were not able to join us. They had made the arrangements for the day including the meeting room and a guided tour of the museum. The August and September Minutes were then read and accepted. Next Hank Messing gave his Treasurers report. The totals were: Savings $26,889.61, Richard Wilson Memorial Fund $2,104.83, CDs $22,132.41. News of damages to covered bridges was given including some to Buskirks CB on the Washington Co. side and also vandalism to the Gettysburg, Pa. Sachs CB. Jeanette Wilson informed Hank Messing that the repainting of the Washington Co. bridges has started. We were informed by an E-mail from Tim Cannan, President of PreservationDirectory.com. that the N.Y.S.C.B.S. has been listed on their website. The site covers historic and cultural resource preservation. To view our listing click on “Preservation General Resources” on the sidebar and scroll down to click on “Bridges”. The subject of archive storage was again discussed. There are 5x10x8 climate controlled rooms available for between $50 and $75 per mo. in a facility in the Glens Falls-Saratoga, N.Y. area. It may possibly be less expensive on a yearly basis. Doug Smith suggested that the interest collected on our bequest could cover the expense. A motion was made, seconded and passed. We were reminded to send in our reservations for our holiday dinner and of our executive meeting on November 10th. News of members included Sally Messing had been in the hospital but is now doing well. Homer Fogle announced that Betty Peck is now residing in a nursing home. She would enjoy keeping in touch with everyone. Her address is c/o Conesus Nursing Home 6131 Big Tree Rd. Livonia, N.Y. 14487. Betty also has a private telephone 585-346-1287. Marty Hornung had N.Y.S.C.B.S. calendars available for sale at the meeting. Next we had an involved discussion on the importance of updating our by-laws. Donna Freeland thanked Bob Michielsen, Chuck Knapp and Hank Messing for their help with the updating. The list of changes had been printed in our last newsletter. It was suggested that the new information on family memberships be listed in our membership section of our publications when printed. We also decided to omit (in Article III –Officers Section 1G) the Corresponding Secretary’s responsibility of making ready the envelopes for mailing the Newsletters. Ruth Scott motioned passing the by-laws and it was seconded. The vote was unanimous to pass. Homer Fogle motioned the meeting closed and was seconded by Bob Michielsen. President Donna Freeland closed the meeting at 2:15 followed by an informative tour of the museum.
Respectfully submitted,
Linda Schott
