Meeting Minutes

Our meeting was held at the Glenn Curtiss Museum at Hammondsport, N.Y. on June 10th. Twenty six members attended. We had a 50-50 raffle that was won by Homer Fogle that raised $34.00 for the society. A coffee/mug set donated by Donna Freeland was won by Jill Michielsen raising another $27.00. The meeting was brought to order at 1:07 by President Donna Freeland. The March and May Minutes were read. The April meeting had been cancelled do to bad weather. A correction to the March minutes was noted. Bernard Cubitt was the attending charter member instead of Arthur Hammer as was stated. Both March and May Minutes were then accepted. Hank Messing gave his Treasurer’s Report: Balances are as follows - Checking account $9985.18 – Savings $24,710.76 – Richard Wilson Memorial Fund $1,880.08 – CDs 21,848.69. Membership Report: Honorary 9 – Paid 349 – Total 358 – 11 above 2006.   Donna Freeland’s President’s Report: Wayne Marshfield will cover Dick Wilson’s trustee position until 2008. David Guay is now Historian. Marikka Guay will be our store keeper. Karen Marshfield will now be in charge of the newsletter. All members are encouraged to see the coverage of our Dick Wilson Memorial Covered Bridge Safari in our upcoming Courier. It has been suggested that the 2008 Safari NOT be in West Virginia one reason being the high gas prices. Connecticut and Massachusetts may be considered. The problem we encountered at this year’s safari with the beaver problem at Hall’s Mills C.B. has been reported to the Sullivan Co. D.P.W. Linda Willauer  reported there was an article on the Beaverkill CB and that it was up for a vote to be put on the National Register. David and Marikka Guay along with David and Carol Frantz will be manning our booth at the Salem courthouse during the dedication of the Washington Co. Covered Bridges, Eagleville, Rexleigh & Buskirks. We were reminded of this August meeting being on Saturday the 4th. The subject of our NYSCBS brochures was given attention. Some ideas that were addressed were: Updating photos, printing in color, including membership prices, having a detachable membership application form, cost, inclusion of authentic covered bridges as well as historic, adding GPS etc. A motion was made and accepted to mock up a brochure. It was also noted that an updated NYSCBS tack up card should be addressed. An interesting fire retardant was demonstrated at the Bucks Co. Pa. CB Festival. They were in the process of raising money to have their CBs treated to help prevent arson. The demonstration was quite impressive. We understand that the Vermont CB Society has information on this product also. It was also noted however by the Virginia CB Society that they believed it causes rot because of sealing in moisture. This would be a good product to do some research on. George Conn informed us that the 2nd Annual John Donovan CB Safari will be held on September 29th & 30th. Sean McDermott is now finalizing the prep for the next Courier. He would like to remind everyone to send input for all future issues. Sally Smith is trying to get the Eagleville and Rexliegh CB repainted to their original colors instead of the bright red. Flooding in November 2006 caused a large dirt washout under Bob Munson's  22’ Queen Truss Covered Bridge. He’s happy to report the bridge is fine and also his famous outhouse. Marty Hornung brought a sample of a 2008 CB calendar for us to observe. Donna Freeland also brought a sample of a calendar that we could use our own photos for. The cost of each was quite different with Marty’s being much less because they use stock pictures of any CB. Virginia Sargeant reported that Dorothy Watkins of the Livonia Historical Society would like a presentation done by the NYSCBS. Chuck Knapp is in the process of making arrangements for the October and November meetings. A train trip may be happening for October and November’s meeting will be our Holiday final meeting for the year at the Crystal Palace in Big Flats, NY. The issue of a storage unit for archives was discussed. A motion was made and accepted by Chuck Knapp and Bob Michielsen to set up a committee to seek information on the feasibility on setting up a museum with a progress report due by October 2007. A motion was made and accepted by Bob Michielsen and Chuck Knapp for the NYSCBS to endeavor to create a professional DVD covering current and past Covered Bridges of New York State. The nominating committee was chosen including Linda Schott, Hank Messing, and Nancy Knapp. John Petras brought up our interest in updating the by-laws. By October we should have a list of suggestions to be put up for review. A letter needs to be sent to all the general membership as per Sally Messing. The final vote can be in November. The committee for this will be Bob Michielsen, Chuck Knapp, Donna Freeland and Hank Messing. Gift memberships at a discount of ½  price were discussed and agreeable to all. The gift givers names will be put in a drawing for a free 1 year membership to and will be drawn in November. Our publications will advertise this. Liability insurance information will be collected as per Sally Messing. The meeting was closed at 3:00.

Happy Bridging, Linda Schott
